Desert Dubai is flooding. The day before, there was a heavy downpour with a gusty wind. In the UAE, on the arid Arabian Peninsula, rain is uncommon, but does occur periodically in the colder winter months. However, such showers are an unheard of phenomenon for the region. The authorities report a record amount of precipitation in the last 75 years, and world agencies predict that more precipitation is expected in the region.
The government of the United Arab Emirates called the downpour an "exceptional" climatic event. Therefore In the UAE, schools were closed, and officials were advised to work remotely.
Images of flooding are spreading on social networks - main roads are in water, real ponds have formed in the middle of the streets, in which cars are floating, the local subway and the airport have been flooded.
