The Russian manufacturer of combat vehicles "Uralvagonzavod" announced that the production of heavy flame-throwing rocket systems TOS-1A "Solntsepek" has been increased by 250%.

Details

The decision to increase production stems not only from increased production capacity, but also reflects the strategic importance of these systems on the battlefield. Army Recognition reports as of 22 November 2023 indicated that approximately 50 units of the TOS-1A and its successor, the TOS-2, were in service.

In response to the vulnerability of these systems, particularly to attacks by Ukrainian drones and munitions, the TOS-1A's defenses were allegedly improved. Installation of "cage" armor against FPV-drone strikes and barrage munitions, and the mobile electronic warfare system "Volnorez" provides additional protective capabilities against electronic threats.

TOS-1A is equipped with a missile launcher that can hold 24 missiles

Despite these upgrades, similar Russian systems have suffered significant losses, with 20 TOS-1A units reportedly destroyed during full-scale warfare.

The radius of action of TOS-1A is somewhat limited compared to traditional artillery systems. It can effectively hit targets at a distance of 400 meters to 6 kilometers. This shorter effective range is designed to maximize the destructive power of its munitions in a concentrated area. The weapon fires 220 mm rockets equipped with fuel-air explosives that can generate extreme temperatures of up to 3000 degrees Celsius upon detonation. This intense heat not only causes immediate destruction, but also consumes all nearby oxygen, creating a high-pressure shock wave that can destroy infantry and unarmored vehicles.
