We choose a gas burner for a trip

27

Surprisingly, only 30 years ago camping gas equipment was used only in equipped camping. This was due to the quality of the gas mixture in the cylinder. At that time, it consisted of butane and propane, was sensitive to low temperatures and altitude. Only in 1989, isobutane was added to the gas mixture, which ensured uninterrupted operation of gas burners in a wide range of temperatures and at different heights.

Today light compact gas burners have become an integral attribute of a tourist's and mountaineer's equipment. Let's note the main advantages of modern burners:

  • the high energy value of the gas in the cylinder ensures long-term operation of the burner, which is extremely important in field conditions with a minimal set of tools;

  • thanks to the purity of the gas mixture, free of unnecessary impurities, no soot remains on the burner, it is easy to clean and maintain;

  • the burner is easy to use: connect it to the cylinder, open the valve and light it. No collecting firewood, drying raw branches and fanning the fire;

  • stability of burning and an additional windproof screen not only allow you to heat up or cook a dish in any weather conditions, but also significantly reduce the time spent on the entire process.

Among the disadvantages, it is possible to highlight the large weight of the cylinder, malfunction at temperatures below -22℃ and a small amount of fuel inside, as well as being prohibited for transportation in an airplane.

Factors that are important when choosing a gas burner for camping

  1. Number of people. The more tourists, the larger the volume of dishes you will need, and therefore the larger the diameter of the burner.

  2. What is cooking? Stew, stewed meat and milk porridge are best left for everyday life. To prepare most dishes, you need a wide slicer so that the bottom of the pan is heated evenly, as well as sensitive flame control. Limit your diet to soups and freeze-dried foods that require only boiling water.

  3. Expected weather conditions. going on a trip in winter, when the air temperature will be significantly below zero, you should take a closer look at the technical solutions offered by the manufacturer: the fuel preheating function, the ability to turn the cylinder over or warm it with your hands, whether there is a built-in wind shield or whether you need to think about an additional screen.

  4. Weight In an effort to reduce the weight of equipment, brands offer customers gas burners made of aluminum and titanium. However, there is a question about the price and efficiency of the lightweight product, plus the weight of the cylinder.

  5. Compactness when folded. For cyclists and water tourists, the aspect of compactness comes to the fore. The burner is often packed in dishes, so when choosing the best option, estimate its dimensions and whether it will be possible to pack it in a cup/bowl or will have to be stored in a separate case.
