Features of architecture.

The area is surrounded by a number of buildings that make up a unique architectural complex:

– House of State Industry (building of Gosprom);

– regional council and Kharkiv regional state administration;

– Palace of children's and youth creativity;

– Kharkiv hotel;

- a military university and some structures that are significant to me.

Despite the fact that the buildings adjacent to the square are built in different styles, they are harmoniously combined together, complementing each other.

In addition, the city garden named after Shevchenko. The metro stations "Universitet" and "Gosprom" are located below it, which are hubs, so it will not be difficult to get here, even if the tourist does not know the city.

History of the square.

Initially, most of its territory belonged to the university. In addition, a number of clinics and buildings of the medical faculty were located here. But when the construction of the Gosprom building began in 1925, it was necessary to open up the view of this architectural ensemble, and the obstructing structures were demolished, as a result of which the square was formed almost in its current form. There is a legend that hardly corresponds to reality: when Dzerzhinsky visited Kharkov, he was made a remark about the grandiose landfill in front of the building of Gosprom under construction. The authorities showed resourcefulness, saying that the construction of the square is planned here. In the future, it had to be implemented.

During its existence, the square managed to change its name several times. At first it was called Veterinarnaya, then Komsomolskaya, later it was renamed in honor of Dzerzhinsky. The main city celebrations and military parades were held there. With Ukraine gaining independence in 1990. it was given the name Independence Square, and later - Svobody, which it still bears at the present time.

The square survived the difficult years of the Great Patriotic War. Militiamen were trained here. During the occupation, the Nazis tried to demolish the Gosprom building, but they did not manage to do it completely - the building turned out to be quite reliable, and it was later restored.

At the time of its construction, it was one of the first high-rise buildings built in the Soviet Union, representing a good example of the design of an administrative structure.

In 1934 the "International" hotel was built, later named after the city - "Kharkiv".

The square got its final look after the redevelopment in 1962.

In 1944 a monument to Stalin was erected in the center of its round part, which in 1965 replaced the monument to Lenin. Currently, it is dismantled due to changes in the social and political life of the country.

Over time, the square acquired an important importance in the social and political life of the city, and it is rightfully considered the main attraction of the city.
