One returned immediately, while the other enjoyed freedom for a whole week.

The police of the Czech Republic went on the trail of an unusual fugitive who was stalking from a prison near Prague - a kangaroo.

The law enforcement officers said that on August 3, two kangaroos, who lived in the same enclosure and dug together, escaped from the prison in the city of Jirzhitsa in the southeast of the capital. But later one of the marsupials returned by himself.

The staff worked hard to capture George in collaboration with a veterinarian specializing in the breeding and care of exotic animals.

On August 10, George returned. The kangaroo enjoyed freedom for exactly one week.

"He jumped to the prison independently and voluntarily, then the convict and the guard caught him in a volleyball net and transferred him to another kangaroo in the enclosure. The refugee is hungry, but everything is fine," the police said.

Other animals live in the prison, including rabbits, llamas and roosters. They are part of a prison program that allows inmates nearing the end of their sentences to learn skills, including farming and animal husbandry, as a form of therapy. The presence of animals in the prison increases the sense of responsibility in the convicts and helps them develop new competencies. Kangaroos have been living in an open-air prison since 2018.
