Starting from May 1, a new provision to the Road Traffic Rules comes into force in Ukraine, which regulates the use of daytime running lights and other lighting devices on vehicles outside of populated areas.

These changes were introduced by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine last fall, canceling the time limit for this requirement, which previously applied from October 1 to May 1. Now it operates constantly, regardless of the season or time of day, writes Gazeta.ua.

According to the updated rules, all vehicles moving outside of populated areas must have their daytime running lights or low beam headlights on. This applies to both cars and motorcycles.

In the absence of daytime running lights, drivers are obliged to turn on the dipped headlights.

In addition, in conditions of limited visibility, it is allowed to use high beam headlights or fog lights, provided that this does not lead to the blinding of other road users.

These changes aim to improve road safety, as daytime running lights improve the visibility of vehicles to other road users.

According to the European Research Institute for Road Safety, the use of daytime running lights can reduce the number of traffic accidents in the daylight hours by 10-15%.
