Last weekend in Ohio, the carcass of a dead fishing marten was found on the side of the road. At the moment, Pekania pennanti is not an endangered species. At the same time, it was completely exterminated in Ohio and several other American states.

From the material published by Newsweek, it follows that the dead animal was found near Kent State University. Visually, it was similar to an elk. The animal's autopsy was undertaken by specialists of the Department of Natural Resources. If they confirm it's a fishing marten, the spot where it was found would be the westernmost point in the state where they were last seen 200 years ago.

According to the Akron Beacon Journal, there have been 40 confirmed cases of fishing martens in northeast Ohio. Predators migrate from Pennsylvania. The marten found near the road was pregnant. According to wildlife specialist Lori Brown, this suggests that Pekania pennanti is returning to Ohio.

Ilks were exterminated in Ohio for their valuable fur. Martens eat nuts and fruits, but they also hunt rodents. The species Pekania pennanti is able to cope with the porcupine.
