An initiative group of Icelanders has started collecting signatures so that the 700-year-old Snaifetljökull glacier can take part in the presidential election on June 1.

As reported by "European Truth", the publication states this The Guardian.

The initiative campaign to nominate a glacier for the presidential elections of Iceland began in mid-March. Her idea came from the Icelandic-Canadian artist Angela Rawlings in 2010, when she made a trip to Snaifetlsjökull.

Now more than 50 Icelanders have joined together to collect signatures to nominate the glacier for the presidential election. So far, they have collected about 200 signatures out of the 1500 required, which must be submitted by April 26.

According to Iceland's constitution, a presidential candidate must be a citizen of the country over the age of 35, a requirement Snaifetljökull formally meets. Rawlings also took Snaifetlsjokutl as a middle name, which allows her to act as a proxy for the "candidate" to handle other legal details.

According to the initiators of the campaign, Snaifetljökull's participation in the presidential elections of Iceland will not only attract international attention to the country, but will also allow raising the issue of climate change, which also affects the glacier.

They also discussed the various ways in which Snæfetljökull would carry out his mandate if elected president. For example, it will be possible to sign laws with a symbolic seal, and for foreign visits - to send a bottle of melted water.
