Ukraine to receive Paveway aerial bombs: how it could change the war

The new package of military aid to Ukraine from Great Britain will include Paveway IV laser-guided aerial bombs.

Business Insider writes about this with reference to the Ministry of Defense of the country. The founder of the European Resilience Initiative Center think tank Serhii Sumlennyi says that the main target of these weapons will be Russian air defense systems, radars, warehouses and communication centers.

Also, air bombs can compete with Russian planning bombs, with the help of which the invaders break through the defenses of the Ukrainian army. He is convinced that in similar operations against the occupiers, Paveway will be particularly effective in combination with other high-precision weapons.

At the same time, RAND Europe's assistant director of defense research, James Black, believes that it will be difficult for the Ukrainian Air Force to take risks in raids due to the risk of being shot down by the Russian Federation, so Paveways are unlikely to have a transformative effect on the battlefield. He believes that ATACMS missiles will have a much greater impact - they can hit a wider range of targets and do not need to navigate enemy air defenses or pose a risk to manned aircraft.

Justin Bronk, an expert on Russia and aerial warfare from Britain's Royal Joint Services Institute, notes that Ukraine does not have the equipment to make full use of laser guidance, and planes will have to drop bombs at long distances, which will limit their accuracy.

Aid to Ukraine from Great Britain: the latest news

It will be recalled that on April 23, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced the largest ever package of military aid to Ukraine.

It included 60 boats, more than 1600 missiles, including the long-range Storm Shadow, more than 400 vehicles and about 4 million rounds of ammunition for small arms.
