The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia expressed a "strong protest" to the head of the Latvian embassy in connection with the declaration of two employees of the Russian embassy in Riga as persons non grata "without any grounds".

"Based on the principle of reciprocity... it is stated that two diplomatic employees of the Embassy of Latvia are being expelled from Russia," the message reads.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia threatened "other painful steps for Riga" in case of "continuation of hostile actions against Russian diplomats."
