The old Ford Mustang became an off-road restomod

The new project was presented by the BorromeodeSilva studio, which is responsible for the exteriors of the Automobili Amos Futurista and Safarista hatchbacks and the Eccentrica Diablo supercar. The STL1 convertible features a licensed low-carbon steel body, new suspension with coilover struts, and beefed-up brakes. The car is powered by a Road Runner V8 5.0 engine that develops 450 horsepower and 515 Nm of torque.


The Milan studio BorromeodeSilva, which presented the restomods Automobili Amos Safarista and Eccentrica Diablo to the world, is back with an even more unexpected project – the Mustang STL1 SUV. For creative director Carlo Borromeo, it became a kind of tribute to the trip from New York to Buenos Aires, which he made in 2008 at the wheel of a classic Mustang. During the trip, Borromeo pondered how he could reimagine the iconic pony car – and thanks to the design team, his idea was finally realized a few years later.

Borromeo himself calls the car Fastback Mustang Safari. It has a new silicon-alloyed low-carbon steel body, reinforced tubular wishbone suspension and massive brakes with aluminum calipers, the rear ones of which are carried outside the wheels, like the Alfa Romeo SZ. To improve the geometric passability, the sidewalls are narrowed, and the overhangs are shortened, but the most interesting detail is the pipes of the exhaust system, integrated into the canonical three-segment headlights. The new look is complemented by an open roll cage and a new interior design with a digital instrument panel.

A special car needs a special engine, BorromeodeSilva thought, and decided to equip the Mustang STL1 with a five-liter "atmospheric" Ford Road Runner. It differs from the regular Coyote V8 with forged components and an intake manifold taken from the racing Mustang Boss 302R. The output is 450 horsepower and 515 Nm of torque, which go to the rear wheels through a high-friction differential. So far, BorromeodeSilva plans to build only one instance of the STL1. However, if there are more of them, no one will be upset. Orders for restomods are already accepted, but prices, as always in similar projects, will be announced only at a personal meeting.
