The Budapest Transport Center (BKK) has announced the extension of free travel for refugees from Ukraine in public transport until September 30, 2024, the SchengenVisaInfo project reports.
It is noted that such a step allows refugees to continue to have access to transport services simply by presenting a valid Ukrainian travel document for identification. However, from 1 April 2024, this free service will no longer apply to local buses and HÉVs in Budapest.
Refugees can use the service if they have an official travel document of Ukraine (Ukrainian passport, Ukrainian identity card, Ukrainian residence permit, student card or any other document).
As the agency explains, documents entitling to free travel remain valid on BKK flights, except in certain cases.
The introduction of free transport for refugees from Ukraine was first launched on March 4, 2022. Then the decision was extended until the end of March 2023.
Ukrainian refugees
Within two years of the start of the full-scale Russian invasion, more than 14 million Ukrainians – almost a third of the country's population – were forced to leave their homes. More than 6,5 million of them currently live outside the country as refugees.
Because of the war, new dimensions of social differentiation appeared in Ukrainian society. In particular, Ukrainians have a negative attitude towards compatriots who have gone abroad, especially men.
