Underwater artifacts
Dozens of historical artifacts dating back to the 4th century BC. - 12th century AD, were found during underwater excavations in the Kerpe region.
During underwater excavations in the Turkish Bay of Kerpe, archaeologists found ancient artifacts dating from the 4th century BC to the 12th century AD. This is reported by Arkeonews.
This is the first scientific underwater excavation of the historic Kerpe Bay, which was once an important trading post. They started in 2020.
The ancient Kerpe Bay is located in the Kandiri district of Kocaeli Province on the Black Sea coast of Turkey. Translated from Greek, the name means "jug" or "pot". Once there was an important trading port here.
The team of scientists worked at a distance of 80 meters from the shore and at a depth of four meters, on an area of approximately 2 square meters.
During the excavations, the remains of commercial amphorae dating back to the 4th century BC were recovered from under the water. to the 12th century AD, to red-glazed pottery, lamps, pipe fragments, various cultural treasures belonging to the Ottoman period and remains of shipwrecks.
