The manufacture of the rim was followed by the killing of an animal – as a rule, a horse, goat or deer – and the tanning of the hide.
Images of birds and animals, as well as patterns symbolizing the sun, moon, wind, water, and other natural objects, were often applied to the skin. To "revive" the tambourine, a number of special rituals were performed, and only after that it could be used to connect with the Three Spheres and travel to the Center of the World.
