Studying in Poland: housing options for foreign students

31

Studying in Poland is gaining more and more popularity among Ukrainian students. This is due to a number of factors: proximity to home, similar mentality, relative ease of admission, and high European quality of education. However, enrolling in a Polish educational institution is half the success, and then students face another test, namely the search for suitable housing. What options are there for foreigners? What type of housing to choose and why, read further.

Housing options in Poland for foreign students

Of course, the options here are quite standard: an apartment or a dormitory. This is the whole choice, however, there are many nuances and Polish hostels can be radically different. Let's take as an example the Polish city of Krakow, where almost the largest percentage of students are based, because the city is quite university-like. There are many universities here, both public and private, including quite prestigious ones that attract young people not only from Ukraine, but also from other countries of the world.

In Krakow, a student has the following housing options:

  1. An apartment or a room in an apartment;
  2. Hostel from the university;
  3. Private hostel, like https://livinnxpoland.pl/ru/ .

In principle, foreigners will face an identical choice in almost any other Polish city.

It is worth noting that upon arrival in Poland, most universities do not accommodate students in their own dormitories, although such are available. In the best case, foreigners can be given a list of addresses of the same hostels, or a list of apartments that are often rented by students, and you can independently inquire whether there is a free place for you. Therefore, it is worth thinking about housing and taking care of it even before moving to a foreign country.

If you briefly characterize each of the above-mentioned housing options, it is difficult to single out any clear pluses or minuses. Each type of housing has its advantages and disadvantages. For example, an apartment will turn out to be more expensive than an ordinary dormitory, but it will be more comfortable in terms of personal space. But again, for the funds that the apartment owners want, it is possible to rent a room in a private hostel and have all the most comfortable conditions. However, from the minuses, similar hostels are not in every city. Let's take a closer look at each housing option.

Housing options in Poland for students: advantages and disadvantages

 It should be noted that only in private hostels like Livinnx students will definitely get comfortable conditions, good repairs, and in addition a lot of entertainment, which are already included in the cost of living. This includes a swimming pool, jacuzzi, game room, gym and the like. That is, a kind of "all-inclusive" and the case when expectations coincide with reality, and the money spent on such housing is not in vain. As for the other options, good luck.

University hostels, in most cases, leave much to be desired. The conditions are sometimes very modest, and the room has to be shared with several people. By the way, in private hostels it is possible to rent a single room with its own kitchen and bathroom. In university, this is something from the realm of fiction. Among the bonuses of the state hostel is its price. Although you shouldn't relax here either, because unlike Ukraine, hostel rooms are quite expensive in Poland. The price varies from 400 to 1000 zlotys per month.

As for renting apartments, mostly students can afford a small room on the outskirts of the city, because housing closer to the center is too expensive.

To summarize all of the above and help you make the right choice, we will characterize all types of housing according to three main criteria:

  1. Comfort level. In terms of comfort, a private hostel wins, because there is everything a student needs and even more. It is very convenient that utility payments are already included in the price, while renting an apartment, you should inquire about the amount of utilities in advance to avoid unpleasant surprises. Regarding comfort in university dormitories, it is very doubtful here.
  2. Bureaucracy. Do not forget about such an important point as temporary registration. There is no problem with this in hostels, but when renting an apartment, the owner can refuse a foreigner. Despite the fact that this is the most harmless and harmless legal procedure for the owner. A residence permit is required to obtain a residence permit, so this point should be taken into account in advance.
  3. Price If you analyze all three options, then the university dormitory will be the cheapest. Private hostels and apartments can fluctuate in the same price, but the level of comfort is clearly different (in favor of a hostel), and the apartment does not have the same atmosphere and language environment. In hostels, it is easy to find friends who will learn Polish and English with native speakers.
