Electrical equipment store: why do you need a UPS?

49

UPS (uninterruptible power supply) is a device whose main function is to maintain voltage and ensure safe operation of devices in the event of a power failure. There are various factors to consider when choosing the right UPS. Electrical equipment store offers modern uninterruptible power supplies for any needs.

Types of UPS uninterruptible power supply sources?

UPS can be divided into two large groups: online and offline. These solutions are significantly different from each other, so they have completely different applications.

Online devices

Online UPSs differ, first of all, in that they are constantly active. During operation, the device is connected according to a separate circuit to the output, thanks to which all interference created by the network is eliminated. This means safer operation of devices that are especially sensitive to small voltage deviations. UPS of this type usually find their purpose in servers, where devices should not be subjected to unstable power supply. Thanks to this solution, the moment of switching to battery power in the event of a failure occurs instantly.

The disadvantage of this type of device is that the equipment works constantly, regardless of the situation. This is due to the fact that it generates noise and at the same time needs an appropriate cooling system, and its operating costs are high. In addition, it is worth mentioning that devices of this type often have a "bypass" function - so that it is possible to forcibly transfer the output power directly from the network.

Linear interactive devices

Compared to their predecessors, autonomous devices ask devices directly from the network, they switch to battery power only when they detect the absence or instability of the voltage for more than 5-10 ms. However, this is still sufficient protection against sudden shutdown of devices. These types of power supplies are usually used in home and office solutions to allow turning off the computer without the risk of data loss.

The advantages of this type of device include a lower cost of operation and noise, which is emitted only when powered by batteries. The disadvantage of such a solution is the lack of filtering of the output voltage - due to its direct transmission from the network in the normal mode of operation of the device. Here it is worth mentioning the improved Line Interactive UPS - they are characterized by voltage stabilization in the event of failures - unfortunately, they are able to regulate only significant voltage drops, in the range from 8 to 15%.

What power of the UPS will be required?

One of the most important issues that must be considered immediately after choosing the type of device is the total power of the devices that will be connected to it. In order to achieve the maximum efficiency of the power source and operating time, the power per charging cycle should not exceed 80% of the efficiency of the device. For example, for a set of devices consuming 400 W, it is necessary to use a UPS with a power of at least 500 W.
