Voltage drops: when to sound the alarm

30

Voltage drops in power grids are a fairly common problem faced by residents of both large cities and small villages. Unfortunately, the electricity supply system in many populated areas of Ukraine is worn out, and more and more electrical appliances are used in homes today.

This leads to sharp jumps in the mains voltage, which adversely affect the functionality and durability of energy consumers, and in some cases can even cause short circuits and fires. That is why it is important to ensure reliable protection of electrical networks against strong surges. For these purposes, special devices are used, which can be bought in the online store "220 Volt».

Causes of voltage surges

Voltage drops: when to sound the alarm

There are a number of reasons why voltage drops are observed in electrical networks. Among them can be distinguished:

  • instability of the work of autotransformers;
  • emergency situations related to power lines;
  • poorly equipped grounding;
  • breaks in the neutral wire;
  • frequent network overloads;
  • short circuit of wires;
  • sharp breaks in the power line;
  • improper installation of networks or equipment;
  • connection of energy-consuming consumers;
  • carrying out welding works.

Low voltage is often observed in some houses with uneven loading of power lines. To correct such a situation, electricians often increase the level of the supplied load at the output of distribution transformers, which is why there are strong drops in houses located at the beginning of the power line. Also, among the reasons, it is possible to note lightning strikes in power lines. And even despite the short duration of such pulses (usually milliseconds), this is quite enough for the complete failure of electrical appliances.

If you almost never notice the flickering of light bulbs or the weak operation of household appliances, then electricity suppliers are doing their job conscientiously, and there is no urgent need for protective devices. But in some cases installation of electric barriers is necessary. You should sound the alarm in situations where you start to notice the following signs:

  • failures in the operation of household, kitchen or other household appliances;
  • changes in the brightness of the lighting system;
  • burning out light bulbs;
  • unusual hum when the refrigerator is working;
  • sudden shutdowns of the computer, TV or other devices.

Ways to protect electrical equipment from voltage drops

Voltage drops: when to sound the alarm

When choosing suitable options for protecting household appliances from power surges, one should take into account the nature of problems, the frequency of surges, and other important points. If the jumps are extremely rare and short-lived, then you can get by with simple protective network devices that prevent the negative consequences of emergency situations. With frequent drops and changes in current parameters, it is necessary to install stabilizers for the whole house or individual electrical appliances.

If jumps are frequent, voltage dips and periodic power outages are observed, then you cannot do without uninterruptible power sources. It is important to correctly determine the capacity of the battery in order to ensure the necessary power reserve time. In case of particularly frequent surges, it is advisable to use complex protection: a stabilizer should be installed at the entrance of the electrical network to the house, and also connect some household appliances to the UPS.
