How dangerous is riding on winter tires in warm weather?
The use of winter tires at a temperature above +11 entails an increase in the braking distance by almost two times. In addition, the rubber softens, as a result of which the car's handling deteriorates. Wheel wear doubles.
But don't rush to change tires. To begin with, you should make sure that even early in the morning the cold will not come as a surprise. Riding on summer tires at temperatures below +7 is dangerous. The rubber squeals and slips on the asphalt.
Which tread pattern is better
When choosing a tread, they take into account the weather in the region and which roads are mainly used for movement:
- an aggressive driving style requires rubber with a minimum number of horizontal grooves. Thanks to this, stability during movement increases;
- off-road driving requires a high tread and a wide distance between rubber blocks;
- in a rainy region, tires with a V-shaped pattern will provide better movement.
Depending on the location of the drawing elements, the following types are distinguished:
– symmetric non-directional drawing. The classic universal variant, the most common among motorists. Budget solution. The rubber is suitable for use in urban conditions and outside the city;
– symmetric directional pattern. The best solution for regions with frequent rains. Tires are characterized by high controllability and resistance to aquaplaning;
- asymmetric drawing. It combines the advantages of the two previous types. The tire feels good in rainy and dry weather. It is divided into 3 zones: inner, middle and outer. The purpose of the middle one is to drain water, the inner and outer ones increase grip with the road for comfortable cornering.
Tire size
To determine it, 3 indicators are taken into account: height, width and diameter. These indicators are applied on the side of the rubber. It should be purchased only with the parameters recommended by the car manufacturer. Otherwise:
- rubber with a raised profile reduces the controllability of the car. There is a risk that it will slip off the disk and cause an accident;
- the width above the recommended one leads to contact of the front wheels with the wheel arches. At the same time, the durability of the rubber decreases;
- low-profile tires will increase the car's sensitivity to bumps on the road. Riding will become less comfortable and the life of the suspension will decrease;
- a diameter higher than the recommended one leads to the fact that the wheel clings to the wheel arch. This increases the chance of getting into an accident.
According to the profile, the following are distinguished:
- low-profile. They increase the controllability of the car. It is not recommended to use in cities with poor road surface;
– high-profile;
- full profile. According to operational characteristics, they are similar to high-profile ones. Recommended for off-road driving.
