Brackets before implantation - why they are installed before, and not after, implants

33

Braces are a non-removable orthodontic system that is installed to correct the position of the teeth and correct other bite defects. The entire structure is a set of small brackets that are fixed on the front side of the crowns or on the inside of the row (lingual systems), then they are connected to each other with the help of an arch. It can also be attached to the plates by means of special locks or elastic ligatures. In some cases, they are appointed braces before implantation. What is it for - read further in the article.

Why is bite correction prescribed before installing implants

Correcting the bite and correcting the position of the teeth is a rather long process, even despite the appearance of modern and more effective systems. Usually non-removable orthodontic structures are fixed for a period of six months. If you have to deal with a serious pathology, the treatment process can last for several years. Under the influence of the tension force created by the corrective system, the teeth change their position together with the roots. This is one of the important reasons why braces are installed before the implants are inserted, and not after. If the living roots can be slightly moved to allow the tooth to occupy the correct position, then the titanium roots must remain strictly in their places. Otherwise, the development may be complicated, up to the rejection of the structure.

If the patient has made a firm decision to take care of his smile, a complex approach may be needed. To begin with, the specialist evaluates the initial picture and, in the presence of bite defects, offers the installation of a bracket system. When all the teeth present in the mouth are in their place, it will be possible to remove the correcting device and start restoring the missing elements - implantation. It is necessary to understand that the presence of free space in a row inevitably leads to the displacement of elements adjacent to the defect in its direction. In order to be able to use an implant and put a crown on it, the neighboring elements should be returned to their original position, and a course of orthodontic treatment will help here.

Why braces are not put after

It is not recommended to take such a course with the installation of a fixed device after implant placement. This is due to a number of problems that may arise in such a situation:

  • displacement of the implant and the impossibility of subsequent aesthetic prosthetics, including correction of the gingival margin,
  • penetration of infection and inflammation of the hole with subsequent rejection of the structure - such a situation may well be the result of displacement of the implant against the background of insufficient care for the oral cavity (it is more difficult to maintain a high level of hygiene with braces),
  • re-prosthetics will have to be carried out if the patient already had a prosthetic structure in his mouth - it will become uncomfortable and there may even be supports for fastening.

Installation of a non-removable corrective system before implantation will allow correcting the position of the teeth, returning to their place those that have shifted due to the absence of adjacent ones. After that, you can safely proceed to the use of implants and prosthetics. Such a comprehensive approach will allow to achieve the highest quality and aesthetic result, although it will take a lot of time. First, you will have to undergo bite correction, and this may take 1-1,5 years. Then the implantation stage will come, and here it is better to give preference to modern one-stage treatment protocols - it will be possible to fix the prosthetic structure on the same day or within a week after the implantation of artificial roots.
