Swedish brand Volvo has unveiled its first all-electric sedan, the ES90, which will complement its electric model lineup, which until now has only included electric crossovers.
Given that the XC60, XC40 and XC90 models have regularly been Volvo's bestsellers, it makes sense that the brand would first focus on the SUV segment with its fully electric variants.
However, now the electrification of the model range goes further, and the Swedes have introduced their first sedan: the Volvo ES90.
Exterior
With a massive 3,10-meter wheelbase and a length of almost five meters, the Volvo ES90 is clearly designed with the Chinese market in mind. However, the long wheelbase also allows for a car that still remains quite compact with short front and rear overhangs.
There's no denying the similarities to the Polestar 2 in the proportions of the ES90: a short hood, short, thick rear end, and aerodynamic tailgate. At the rear, with its split taillights, you can see design cues from the EX90.
With functionality and safety in mind, the ES90 had to be as aerodynamic as possible to achieve long distances. Volvo calls it “the art of balance.” The result is a drag coefficient of 0,247. The VW ID.7 achieves 0,23 thanks to a more aerodynamic front end. But Volvo didn’t want to subordinate everything to aerodynamics.
The ES90 can still rely on the classic, rather angular Volvo front end with the Thor’s hammer light signature. The main gain in drag coefficient is achieved at the rear. Like the EX90, the ES90 also relies on extensive sensor technology with lidar in the upper part of the roof. Aerodynamic wheels with a diameter of up to 22 inches in an aerodynamic design are also offered.
Interior
Inside, the Volvo ES90 continues to rely on the proven Google-based Android Automotive platform, a revised version of which is also available in the XC90, EX90 and EX30. This means that Google Maps and the Google Assistant are always available. In the middle, a 14,5-inch infotainment screen provides a central overview, while the most important information for the driver is displayed on a separate 9-inch instrument cluster. There is also a 13,2-inch head-up display on board. The interior looks just as minimalist and simple as in the EX90.
Of course, the Volvo ES90 also uses sustainable and regional materials, such as the renowned Nordico fabric or real FSC-certified wood. The front seats are adjustable in eight ways, so they can be adapted to individual body ergonomics. In the rear, there are also individually adjustable rear seats with sliding cushions and armrests. The optional electrochromatic panoramic glass roof provides plenty of light in the cabin.
Motors and batteries
The ES90 is not only Volvo's first electric sedan, but also the first model to feature 800-volt technology. The more efficient system, based on the SPA2 platform, is designed to increase range and speed up charging times. In the case of the Volvo ES90, this means a maximum range of 700 kilometers and a charging process from 10 to 80 percent in less than 20 minutes with a maximum output of 350 kW.
The 800-volt system is compatible with future models on the SPA2 platform. During the presentation, a Volvo representative confirmed that a similar system is planned for the EX90 and all other future Volvo models in the future.
The Swedes offer three drive combinations: Single Motor Extended Range with a 245 kW (333 hp) electric motor on the rear axle and a 92 kWh battery and a maximum range of 650 kilometers. A dual-motor all-wheel drive version with 130 kW (177 hp) on the front axle and 200 kW (272 hp) on the rear axle.
The program is completed by the Twin Motor Performance all-wheel drive with 220 kW (299 hp) at the front and 280 kW (381 hp) at the rear. Each of the two all-wheel drive options comes in combination with a 106 kWh battery, which should provide a maximum range of 700 kilometers.
Prices
The Volvo ES90 starts with the Single Motor Extended Range for €71 in the Core trim level. The two all-wheel drive variants start at €990 and €88 respectively – but in the Ultra trim level. All variants are available to order now. Volvo plans to start production in the third quarter of 990. Deliveries are expected to begin in late 94.
