Scientists from the Medical Research Center at McGill University have found a direct link between nutrition and the development of prostate cancer.
According to the article, the consumption of saturated fats causes reprogramming of cells, which contributes to the progression of the disease.
In scientific terms, the consumption of saturated fats mimics the overexpression of the MYC oncogene and accelerates the development of prostate cancer.
Specialists studied the diet of more than 300 patients and the expression of the MYC gene. It turned out that those who preferred fatty foods were four times more likely to die from prostate cancer than others.
— In patients suffering from prostate cancer, the prostate gland contains both tumor cells and healthy ones. We proved that the consumption of saturated fats affects the transcription factors of tumor tissue only, the study says.
Saturated fats are found in red meat, dairy products, palm and coconut oils.
The results of the study can be used in the development of diets for cancer patients, the scientists noted.
