European troops may appear in Ukraine
A specific decision on the deployment of EU troops in Ukraine cannot be made until the format of the peaceful settlement is clear.
European leaders will begin substantive work on formulating the concept of EU security guarantees for Ukraine after the possible end of hostilities. They will include the deployment of European troops on Ukrainian territory. This was reported on Wednesday, March 5, by European Pravda, citing an EU official familiar with the preparation of the agenda for the EU summit, which will be held in Brussels tomorrow.
"During this meeting of the European Council, substantive work will begin on EU security guarantees for Ukraine, which will include planning the possibility of deploying military missions on the territory of Ukraine," the official said.
He reported that up to this point, "the debate on this issue has not yet taken place," only some EU states have publicly expressed their desire or reluctance to send their troops to Ukraine as part of security guarantees.
"Perhaps even more states at the summit will express support for this initiative," the official added.
At the same time, he stated that a specific decision on the deployment of EU troops in Ukraine cannot be made before the format of a peaceful settlement is understood.
The official also recalled that as the first element of providing security guarantees to Ukraine, the European Union is considering "providing support to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, strengthening the Ukrainian army so that in the event of new aggression they can defend themselves."
