The European Parliament has strongly condemned the attempts of the Donald Trump administration to force Ukraine to agree to a forced ceasefire. MEPs said that the US is effectively resorting to blackmail, forcing Kyiv to capitulate to Russia, while excluding the EU from the negotiation process, writes Politico.

European Parliament reaction

More than 440 members of the 720-seat parliament supported a joint declaration condemning any attempts to impose a “peace deal” with Moscow on Ukraine, saying such actions by Washington were counterproductive and actually encouraged Russia to continue its aggression.

MEPs stressed that the change in the US foreign policy position leaves the EU as a key ally of Ukraine. Therefore, EU countries should increase military assistance to Kyiv to compensate for a possible decrease in US support.

How the Trump administration operates

During his second term, Trump suspended military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine, demanding that Kyiv agree to talks with Moscow. Only after Ukraine accepted a 30-day ceasefire did Washington partially restore support.

At this point, Russia has not officially responded to this initiative.

Why is this important for Europe?

Despite suggestions from some European politicians to postpone the vote on the resolution due to ongoing negotiations between the US and Ukraine, the majority of deputies decided to act immediately. The European Union continues to seek ways to strengthen its own security, adapting to changes in the global balance of power.
