According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), sodium cyanide releases hydrogen cyanide gas, which interferes with the body's ability to use oxygen. Exposure to sodium cyanide can quickly lead to death, the CDC says.

According to Graham Stewart, a local official, there were a total of 37 people on both ships at the time of the collision. He informed that one person remains in hospital after the incident, while the remaining 36 sailors are safe.

Reuters reports that the oil tanker that collided with a cargo ship in the North Sea was carrying jet fuel for the US military, part of a US government program to provide fuel to the armed forces.
