The latest Vatican statement says that today the Holy Father "experienced two episodes of acute respiratory failure caused by a significant accumulation of endobronchial mucus."

The pope also suffered a bronchospasm similar to an asthma attack, which required doctors to perform two bronchoscopies, procedures to assess the condition of his airways, due to the need to suction out a large amount of secretions.

To help with breathing, Pope had to use "non-invasive mechanical ventilation." 

The Holy Father remained conscious, oriented and cooperating with medical staff throughout. It is noted that the prognosis for the pontiff remains "moderate."

Reuters recalls that Francis has suffered several bouts of illness in the past two years. In addition, he is prone to lung infections, as he suffered pleurisy in his youth and had part of one lung removed.
