As Ukrinform reports, CBC News writes about this.
“Members of the Liberal Party of Canada have overwhelmingly elected former Central Bank Governor Mark Carney as their new leader and next prime minister,” the article says.
It is noted that Carney won the first round of the election, winning the votes of 85% of registered voters. “He also had a lead in all 343 constituencies, proving the support of party members across the country,” the publication states.
Former Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland came in second place, receiving 8% of the vote.
“Although Carney had long been considered the favorite, even members of his campaign said they were surprised by the overwhelming results of Sunday’s vote,” notes CBC News.
Since Mark Carney is not currently a member of the federal parliament, there is a high probability that Canada will call a snap election. As of now, the federal election is scheduled for October 25.
