Emmanuel Macron condemned Russia's increasingly overt attempts to destabilize Moldova's democratic institutions and the overall situation in the country.
He stated this at a press briefing after a meeting with Maya Sandu at the Elysee Palace, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
"Moldova, whose airspace is regularly violated by Russian drones and missiles, is also forced to confront Russia's increasingly blatant attempts to destabilize the situation, directed, in particular, against the country's democratic institutions," the French president said, assuring that his country would help Moldova increase its resistance to foreign interference.
According to Macron, Moldova is at the forefront of the Russian threat, so Sandu's courage inspires his respect.
"For three years, your country has borne the full brunt of the human and economic consequences of Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine," the French leader emphasized.
He reaffirmed his unwavering support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova within its internationally recognized borders and promised to accompany it in implementing its European course.
"Most recently, Russia has again resorted to energy blackmail, trying to weaken the Moldovan economy, as well as provoke a crisis in Transnistria. As is often the case, Moscow creates crises only to claim that it wants to help resolve them on its own terms and advance its own interests," Macron stated.
He noted that the EU had provided Moldova with emergency financial assistance of €250 million for 2025, part of which was used to finance gas purchases for Transnistria. This came after Gazprom stopped supplies, violating its own obligations.
Earlier, the EU also approved a support plan for Moldova worth 1,9 billion euros, which will help stimulate the economy and modernize infrastructure.
