Recently, Instagram users began complaining that their feed had turned into a chaotic collection of shocking content.

On Reddit, users share that they regularly come across videos of murders, executions, bloody accidents, animal attacks, and even porn. Among the most gruesome videos: a man being swept away by an elephant, shootings, a double murder at a gas station, an accident on an amusement park ride, and even footage of a beheading.

Meta responded to The Guardian by acknowledging the issue and apologizing: “We have fixed an error that was showing some users content that should not have been recommended.” The company also said that this was in no way related to the recent decision to remove fact-checking from Facebook and Instagram.

The cause of the incident was a glitch in Reels' recommendation algorithms, which made it possible to bypass moderation and bring prohibited materials to the top.

According to Meta's official policy, depictions of violence and even death are allowed, but must be accompanied by a warning and an age restriction of 18+.
