Almost half of Germans think electric cars are too expensive

Almost every second German believes that electric cars remain a luxury. Despite the environmental benefits, the main obstacles — price, short range and lack of charging stations — are forcing Germans to postpone the purchase of "green" cars. What figures hide this trend and will the situation change? Terazus learned.

The price is higher than desired.

A YouGov survey for dpa found that 47% of Germans are putting off electric cars because of their cost. Even entry-level models from well-known brands like the Volkswagen ID.3 start at €33, more than double the “ideal” price range for 000% of those surveyed (€42–€15). Only 000% are willing to spend more than €25, and 000% would not consider buying one at all, regardless of the price.

The available options on the market are limited: according to ADAC, only six models in Germany cost up to 30 euros. The cheapest one — the Romanian Dacia Spring for 000 euros — is inferior to its competitors in terms of comfort and power.

Are Germans willing to pay for "their own"?

The issue of loyalty to European brands has divided society. 25% prefer local manufacturers, but only 39% are willing to pay more for it. For comparison: 48% openly prefer affordable imported brands, in particular Tesla or Chinese companies.

Experts note that the reduction in state subsidies for electric cars from 2023 has increased skepticism. For example, previously buyers could receive up to 9 euros in assistance, now only 000 euros for cars cheaper than 4 euros.

Prospects? Until the market offers more budget models and the state restores benefits, electric cars will remain a symbol of an ecological future that is not available to everyone.
