CIA Director John Ratcliffe and Director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service Sergei Naryshkin had a telephone conversation
During the conversation, they agreed on regular contacts between the directors of the special services in order to reduce "confrontation in relations between Moscow and Washington."
On March 11, telephone conversations took place between the Director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, Sergei Naryshkin, and the Director of the US CIA, John Ratcliffe. This was reported by Russian media on Wednesday, March 12.
According to the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, the parties discussed issues of cooperation between the two special services, as well as the resolution of crisis situations. The Russian side noted that during the conversation they agreed on regular contacts between the directors of the special services in order to reduce "confrontation in relations between Moscow and Washington."
The CIA has not yet commented on the reports of these negotiations.
This is the first telephone conversation between the heads of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service and the CIA since Donald Trump took office as US President. In 2023, Naryshkin stated that the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service and the CIA continue to have rare but regular consultations.
The talks between Naryshkin and Ratcliffe came on the heels of a meeting between Ukrainian and U.S. officials in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on March 11. During the meeting, Kyiv agreed to Washington's proposal for a 30-day ceasefire. The Ukrainian president's office said discussions on the details of the temporary ceasefire would begin after March 17.
Immediately after the talks in Jeddah, US President Donald Trump said that the Russian and American sides would meet soon to discuss a ceasefire. Trump also announced a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
