This statement shocked and outraged Mexican representatives, who believe that the head of the Pentagon was referring to "US military actions inside Mexico."
Hegset then publicly repeated the same message at the US-Mexico border.
It is noted that the US Department of Defense declined to comment on this matter.
On Thursday, a Mexican delegation of several ministers met with Hegset and other U.S. officials in Washington to discuss steps the government has taken to combat the trafficking of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid.
Also this week, Mexico extradited 29 drug cartel leaders to the United States.
US President Donald Trump previously stated that Tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada will take effect on March 4.
