Italians were outraged by the lyrics of the song Espresso Macchiato, which are full of stereotypes about them. At the same time, some in Italy, on the contrary, liked the song.
Italy has called on Estonia to annul the results of the country's Eurovision entry, citing lyrics by Estonian winner Tommy Cash that mocked stereotypes about Italy, The Guardian reported on Thursday, February 20.
It is noted that Kesha's song Espresso Macchiato is sung in a mixture of broken English and Italian and contains stereotypes about a mafioso who drinks coffee, smokes, and eats only spaghetti all the time.
According to the publication, the consumer association Codacons filed an appeal with the European Broadcasting Union, questioning whether "it is appropriate to allow a song that insults the country and the entire community" to be part of the contest.
At the same time, many Italians liked the song, as evidenced by the comments on YouTube. “I will vote for Estonia!” wrote one commenter.
On Saturday, Cash won Eesti Laul, Estonia's Eurovision selection process, and will represent the country at the contest in Basel in May if Italy doesn't get their way.
