Japan is experiencing severe weather, with snowfall breaking a national record. Forecasters predict that strong winds and snow are not going to let up.

Forecasts are not encouraging: what is the current situation in Japan?
On the island of Hokkaido, Obihiro city received 12 meters of precipitation in 1,29 hours, marking the first time in 53 years that snow accumulation has exceeded 1,2 meters.
Heavy snowfall was also recorded in Kushiro and Sapporo - the services received dozens of calls from drivers from all over the island whose cars were stuck in the snow.

As he writes NHK World, very strong winds with snow are forecast for the Sea of Japan coast in northern and eastern Japan.
Currently, rapid accumulation of snow is observed in the Hokuriku region and Niigata Prefecture, as well as in the southern part of the Tohoku region.
In just 6 hours, by 11:00 on Wednesday, the height of rainfall reached 20 centimeters in the city of Minamiaizu in Fukushima Prefecture, and 19 centimeters in the Inotani district of Toyama City.
And in the city of Toyama itself, the snow depth has already reached 51 centimeters – the highest level of snowfall in the city since 2022.

Up to 100 centimeters of snow is expected in the Tohoku region and Niigata prefecture by noon Thursday, 80 centimeters in the Hokuriku region, and 70 centimeters in Gifu prefecture. Heavy snowfall is also expected in the Kinki, Hokkaido, Chugoku, Kanto-Koshin and Shikoku regions.
The meteorological agency warned people of possible traffic disruptions, blizzards, high waves, as well as power outages, fallen trees and avalanches.
