Gardeners use a whole range of fertilizers at their summer cottages. Organic, mineral, liquid, dry — there are many varieties. Each of them costs money, so saving them for the next season is a priority. In this article, we will talk about ways to preserve them, even in severe cold weather.
Mineral fertilizers
This category of fertilizers comes in dry and liquid form. Dry powders and granules can withstand severe temperature drops, but high humidity can ruin them. They will stick together into one large lump, which will make it difficult to calculate the required dosage for further use. For storage, it is worth choosing dry rooms with low humidity.
Liquid mineral fertilizers are not affected by moisture, but low temperatures can be harmful. There is a risk that the liquid will separate. Sediment may form. Liquid mineral fertilizers should be stored in heated rooms.
Biofertilizers and their storage
Organic fertilizers have specific storage requirements. First, you need to carefully read the instructions with the main recommendations. Second, depending on the variety, the critical storage temperature can be from 0 to +30 °C. Subzero temperatures are contraindicated for biofertilizers.
Such preparations contain microorganisms that contribute to better plant development and increased yield. If storage conditions are violated, they will die. For the winter, such preparations are better taken from the dacha to warm rooms in the house.
Manure storage
Manure, like other fertilizers, requires proper storage conditions. If you leave it just like that in the open air, the fertilizer will lose up to 40% of its nitrogen. It is better to put it in one pile, but do not tamp it. Its height should be up to 1,8 m. After a few days (from 3 to 5), the manure warms up to 70 °C, and then the temperature gradually begins to drop.
At the next stage, the manure should be watered. On top, make a 40 cm high layer of peat or soil. When you see that the manure has become denser, then it can be covered with a film. If there is snow, it is good to throw more snow on it.
Wood ash
There are no complications with this type of fertilizer. The only thing to ensure is that it is stored in a dry place and in an airtight container. Moisture can spoil it, as it loses certain mineral salts.
Store fertilizers correctly so that there are no problems with them. In the spring, you will be provided with the necessary fertilizers, and you will also save significantly on purchasing new ones.
