The SAIC Volkswagen joint venture has unveiled the new Teramont Pro SUV in China, which will soon transform into the new Atlas for the American market. By the way, at the end of last year, the new Volkswagen Teramont Pro appeared on the website of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China.
Design
The Teramont Pro has a streamlined design with a fully enclosed radiator grille surrounded by large headlights. These are joined by a sporty front end with various air intakes.
From the side, you can see the flowing bodywork, as well as the flush-mounted door handles. The designers also added a character line, as well as a refreshed interior. Other highlights include a spoiler and rear lighting with pixelated taillights.
The crossover has increased in size as it now measures 5158 mm in length, 1991 mm in width and 1788 mm in height. This makes the Teramont Pro 61 mm longer than the Atlas, and the width and height have also increased slightly.
Interior
Volkswagen hasn't revealed the interior, but we can see a digital instrument cluster, floating infotainment system, and a front passenger display. The model can also be equipped with three additional screens, which means the Teramont Pro will be offered with a rear-seat entertainment system.
In terms of equipment, buyers will find a panoramic sunroof, a Harman Kardon audio system and a 30-color lighting system. These are joined by an aroma diffuser, as well as a “royal” front passenger seat, which has an electric footrest, as well as massage and ventilation functions.
Other highlights include rear climate control and rear sunshades. Also visible is a floating center console and what looks like a wireless smartphone charger.
Under the hood
Power is provided by the fifth-generation EA888 engine, which promises improved responsiveness as well as lower fuel consumption and emissions. To achieve this, the familiar powertrain has been significantly upgraded.
The latest engine uses the Miller cycle and uses a 500 bar ultra-high-pressure fuel system for “more precise fuel atomization.” This helps improve combustion efficiency, as well as reduce emissions and engine noise. The model also features a variable geometry turbocharger, as well as an exhaust aftertreatment device that uses high-temperature exhaust gases to “effectively purify harmful substances.”
The changes don’t stop there: The crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons and other moving parts have been “comprehensively strengthened.” The lubrication system has also been improved, and there are updates to the intake and intercooler.
Although these are small changes, power has increased to 272 hp (200 kW) and 400 Nm of torque. This is an increase of 52 hp (38 kW) and 50 Nm. For comparison, the American Atlas has a fourth-generation EA888 engine that produces 273 hp (201 kW) and 370 Nm of torque.
The engine is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and 4Motion all-wheel drive system. This setup allows the crossover to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7,6 seconds.
Volkswagen also noted that the Teramont Pro has DCC adaptive chassis control, as well as the IQ system. Pilot for help The latter is presented as a semi-autonomous driving system L2+, and Volkswagen also added that the model has a “parking butler system” that provides remote parking assistance.
