Scientists from Switzerland conducted an experiment, the results of which confirmed that taking omega-3 in the form of a dietary supplement slows down the biological aging of older people, as evidenced by epigenetic markers.

The study, led by Heike Bischof-Ferrari and Steve Horwarth, aimed to assess the rate of biological aging at the molecular level in people over the age of 70. For this, more than 700 volunteers took omega-3 or a placebo for three years, and some participants were additionally prescribed vitamin D (2000 IU) and physical exercise three times a week for 30 minutes. Almost half of the subjects were generally healthy, which made it possible to evaluate the effect of the supplements without the influence of serious chronic diseases.
According to the data obtained, adding omega-3 to the diet slowed down biological aging by 3-4 months, which is a small but significant result. The best indicators were observed in the group that took omega-3 in combination with vitamin D, which was confirmed by the analysis of three epigenetic clocks - markers that reflect different aspects of aging. The authors emphasize that although the results are promising, they cannot yet be considered the basis for new clinical recommendations.
Scientists warn against taking omega-3s on your own without consulting a doctor, as excessive consumption may increase the risk of developing atrial fibrillation. Given the individual characteristics of the body, the approach to using such supplements should be justified and monitored by medical specialists.
