
Annual check-up for drivers over 75 years of age
The Verkhovna Rada is considering the draft law № 8082, which provides for the introduction of additional checks for drivers aged 18 and over 65 yearsThe main purpose of the document is to assessment of cognitive abilities of elderly driversto determine their ability to safely operate a vehicle, writes borgexpert.com.
What does the new bill provide for?
According to the document:
- Drivers who have achieved 65 years, will have to pass additional checks.
- For older people 70 years these checks will be more frequent.
- To the drivers from 75 years old will have to pass the test annually.
- After reaching the age of 75 Driver's licenses will need to be renewed every year.
The new rules are designed to increase road safety, as age can cause problems with reaction, vision, attention, and other factors that affect driving.
Why is this important?
The proposed changes are part of the European integration reform aimed at raising standards of driving qualifications in Ukraine. Similar inspections are already in place in most European countries, so the likelihood of this bill being passed is quite high.
Today, the following age restrictions apply in Ukraine for obtaining a driver's license:
- 16 years – for mopeds and motorcycles.
- 18 years – for passenger cars (category B).
- 21 – for freight transport and special vehicles.
If the bill is passed, elderly drivers will be forced to regularly confirm their fitness to drive.
