Paradoxically, in Ukraine, during a full-scale war, the demand for expensive luxury cars is growing. For example, in 2024, three Rolls-Royce Spectre electric cars were registered, priced at $440 or more. In addition, Ukrainian license plates were issued this year for 000 Maserati, 13 Bentleys (including 6 Bentley Continental GTs priced at $5 or more), 220 Aston Martins, 000 Lamborghinis, and one Ferrari and one McLaren. Owners of all these cars would have to pay a luxury tax, but loopholes in the law save them this money.
Expert Yevgeny Yermolov said this during an interview with Yuriy Romanenko.
“When they were compiling the list of cars, they missed some brands. And if a brand is not on the list, then the owner of such a car does not pay luxury tax. It seems that this is just a mistake in the law,” Yermolov noted.
So, today the list of taxable models includes Aston Martin, Bentley, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Land Rover, Lexus, and Toyota. However, Ferrari or McLaren are not on the list from the Ministry of Economy of Ukraine, so you do not need to pay tax on them.
The expert also reminded that in 2025, owners of expensive cars will have to pay 25 thousand hryvnias in transport tax if their car is less than 5 years old and costs more than 3 million hryvnias. This tax is paid during the first five years from the date of production of the car.
“If you bought a two-year-old car, you continue to pay this tax for three years, after which you stop paying it from the moment of production,” the expert explains.
The expert emphasized that such gaps in the legislation are very annoying for owners of ordinary cars, who are faced with various additional payments, while at the same time, some sectors of the premium market may have unforeseen advantages due to technical shortcomings in the legislation.
