The Swiss army said it could send 200 soldiers to the peacekeeping mission in Ukraine

Switzerland could provide troops for a future peacekeeping mission in Ukraine if a request is made and the government agrees.

As Ukrinform reports, this was stated by the Commander of the Swiss Armed Forces, Thomas Süssli, in an interview with the SonntagsBlick newspaper, Reuters reports.

"We could probably send about 200 soldiers within nine to twelve months," Süssli said.

He emphasized that in the event of a corresponding appeal to Switzerland, the government and parliament of the country will make decisions on the dispatch of troops.

According to Süssli, talks about sending peacekeepers are currently purely hypothetical, as it remains unclear how the situation between Russia and Ukraine will develop.

"There is no peace yet, and there has been no request (regarding the sending of peacekeepers to Ukraine - ed.) from the United Nations," he said.

Neutral Switzerland participates in several peacekeeping missions around the world, the largest of which is in Kosovo, where Swiss troops were deployed in support of the NATO Kosovo Force (KFOR).
