The European Commission (EC) has initiated strategic negotiations on the future of the automotive industry, involving 22 key market players such as Renault, Volvo, Volkswagen and Tesla.
This was reported on the official website of the European Commission, writes "Ukraine at the wheel".
“The European automotive industry is at a critical juncture and we are aware of the challenges it faces. That is why we are acting quickly to address them,” said EC President Ursula von der Leyen.
The meeting of top leaders of automotive companies with the commission was the first stage, which should lead to concrete steps in early March. That is when the European Commissioner for Transport, Apostolos Tsitsikostas, will present an action plan to overcome the crisis in the Old Continent's automotive industry.
In particular, the ban on the sale of cars with gasoline and diesel engines, which comes into force in 2035, in all 27 member states of the European Union, will be reviewed. It is proposed to supplement it with alternative options for reducing harmful emissions, including the use of synthetic fuels and plug-in hybrids.
The crisis has also forced automakers to reconsider their plans. For example, the largest profit generator in the Volkswagen concern, Porsche, due to the slow development of “battery” vehicles, is once again focusing on internal combustion engines. Even the Macan crossover with gasoline units may be revived.
