The share of supporters of peace talks among Russians has increased to a maximum

The majority of respondents believe that military actions will end in a Russian victory — 76%. Less than 1% of respondents say that Ukraine will win.

In the Russian Federation, the absolute majority of residents support the war against Ukraine and believe in victory. At the same time, more than half want peace talks with the participation of mediators. Such data follows from the results of a survey by the independent Levada Center.

It is noted that in January 2025, 78% of Russians approved of the invasion. 15% of respondents did not support the war. Also, in January 2025, the maximum share of respondents who believed that peace negotiations should begin now was recorded - 61%, while 31% of respondents spoke about the need to continue military actions (the minimum indicators for the entire period of observations).

Previous polls show that 70% of respondents would approve of an immediate end to the war, but only on condition that the occupied territories of Ukraine be preserved. Only 30% of respondents would support an end to the war if the occupied territories were withdrawn.

Since November 2023, the share of respondents who believe that the participation of mediators in negotiations between Russia and Ukraine will facilitate the achievement of a peace agreement has increased to 67% (an increase of 23 pp). Only 13% of respondents say the opposite, and another 20% of respondents hesitated to answer.

23% of respondents named China as a mediator in the negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, 20% - the USA. Another 8% mentioned Turkey, 6% - Hungary and India. 28% of respondents could not name any country (difficult to answer - 21%, no country - 7%).

Also, over the past year, the share of those who believe that the war with Ukraine will end in the next year or sooner has increased, now 43% of respondents hold this opinion. Every third respondent (32%) believes that the conflict will last more than a year.

The survey was conducted from January 23 to 29, 2025 among 1615 people using personal interviews.
