US President Donald Trump has threatened that BRICS countries will face 100% tariffs from the US if they introduce their own currency to replace the dollar, Trump wrote on social media.
He stressed that the idea that the BRICS countries are trying to abandon the dollar, while the US is watching from the sidelines, is over.
“We are going to demand from these seemingly hostile countries a commitment to neither create a new BRICS currency nor support any other currency to replace the mighty US dollar, or they will face 100% tariffs,” the US president wrote.
He added that if a new currency were created, the BRICS countries would “say goodbye to selling out to the great US economy.”
“There is no chance that BRICS will replace the US dollar in international trade or anywhere else, and any country that tries to do so should say hello to tariffs and goodbye to America!” the US leader assured.
Creation of a new BRICS currency: what is known
Even before his inauguration, Trump threatened to impose a 100 percent tariff on goods from BRICS countries if they did not abandon their attempts to create an alternative to the dollar in international trade. He expressed doubts that the BRICS countries would be able to find an alternative to the dollar at all.
Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar has stated that the BRICS countries are not interested in weakening the US dollar at all. He has emphasized, in particular, that the geographical distance of the BRICS countries makes such an initiative difficult, unlike the eurozone.
