US President Donald Trump today, February 1, ordered airstrikes against members of the Islamic State (ISIS) in Somalia. These are the first American attacks on the territory of the African country since the Republican took office, Politico reports.
“These killers we found hiding in caves were threatening the United States and our allies,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social network.
The US President stressed that the airstrikes killed a large number of terrorists and destroyed the caves they were living in. According to him, the attack did not cause any harm to civilians.
According to Trump, the ISIS attack planners were eliminated. He also accused former US President Joe Biden and his administration of not acting quickly enough to deal with the threat.
"The message to ISIS and anyone else who attacks Americans is this: 'We will find you, and we will kill you!'" the head of the White House emphasized.
Reuters reported that the airstrikes were carried out in the Golis Mountains. This information was shared by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
An official in the Somali president's office told reporters that his country's government welcomed the move.
“Somalia cannot be a haven for terrorists,” he said in comments to the agency.
