Taiwan wants to buy $7-10 billion worth of weapons from the US - Reuters

The Taiwanese government is considering purchasing several billion US dollars worth of weapons from the United States.

As Ukrinform reports, it reports Reuters, citing several sources familiar with the situation.

"I would be very surprised if it's less than $8 billion. Somewhere between $7 billion and $10 billion," one source said.

The second source added that the weapons package that Taiwan is considering buying from the US will include cruise missiles for coastal defense and missiles for HIMARS.

According to another source, this package is intended to demonstrate to the United States that Taiwan is committed to its defense.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz said he wanted to expedite arms deliveries to Taiwan.

Taiwan's Ministry of Defense declined to comment on specific purchases, but indicated that it is focused on building its defense.

It is noted that US President Donald Trump said during the election campaign that Taiwan “stole America’s semiconductor business.” This month he threatened tariffs on imports of microchips.

However, his administration continues diplomatic support for the island.
