A federal judge in Rhode Island on Monday issued the first ruling indicating that President Donald Trump's administration has failed to comply with his order to unfreeze billions of dollars in federal grants.
This is stated in a report by The New York Times, Ukrinform reports.
“On Monday, a federal judge said the White House ignored his order to unfreeze billions of dollars in federal grants, marking the first time a judge has directly accused the Trump White House of disobeying a court order,” the publication notes.
Justice John McConnell pointed to the obligation of Trump administration officials to comply with his order, which was approved by the court last month.
Judge McConnell's decision "is a step towards what could quickly escalate into a confrontation between the executive and judicial branches of government" and cause a constitutional crisis, the publication emphasizes. This came a day after US Vice President J.D. Vance declared on social media that "judges are not allowed to control the legitimate powers of the executive branch."
More than 40 lawsuits have already been filed against the Trump administration, the publication notes. They challenge Trump’s “brazen moves,” including revoking birthright citizenship and giving Elon Musk’s team access to the Treasury Department’s confidential payment systems. In most of them, judges have already ruled that the executive branch’s actions may violate existing laws.
