After Starmer's visit to the US, EU leaders plan to return to discussing the issue of European security.
The United States should participate in future security guarantees for Ukraine. This is the "only way" to effectively deter the aggressor country Russia from attacking Ukraine again. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said this on Monday, February 17, Sky News reports.
He reiterated that he was willing to consider the potential deployment of troops to Ukraine, but stressed that America must provide "support" to any peacekeeping force.
"A security guarantee from the United States is the only way to effectively deter Russia from attacking Ukraine again," he emphasized.
The British Prime Minister noted that today, not only the future of Ukraine, but also the future of all of Europe is at stake.
"This is an existential issue for Europe as a whole, and therefore vital to Britain's national interests. This is a unique moment for the collective security of our continent. Any peace deal for Ukraine must protect its sovereignty and deter Vladimir Putin from engaging in further aggression," Starmer stressed.
He also confirmed that he will travel to Washington next week to meet with US President Donald Trump to "discuss what we believe are key elements of a lasting peace."
"It is clear that the US is not going to leave NATO. But we Europeans will have to do more. The issue of burden sharing is not new, but it is relevant now, and Europeans will have to increase both the costs and the capabilities that we provide," Starmer said.
In addition, Starmer announced talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky "in the coming days."
As reported, French President Emmanuel Macron decided to hold an emergency summit of European leaders to discuss the situation in Ukraine and European security.
European Council President Antonio Costa said that the meeting of EU and NATO leaders in Paris to discuss the situation in Ukraine and European security is the beginning of a process that will involve all partners committed to peace.
