Since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, there have been increasing reports of the rupture of underwater communication cables in the Baltic Sea. According to Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defense Council, Russia and its Foreign Intelligence Service are behind this.
Andriy Kovalenko stated that the director of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, Sergei Naryshkin, was involved in cable sabotage.
“The Russian Navy, headed by Naryshkin, is involved in planning “cable” sabotage against Western countries carried out by boats, in particular the tanker fleet,” Kovalenko points out.
According to him, Moscow was thus trying to conduct an analysis and determine the reaction of Ukraine's partners. However, Kovalenko believes that Naryshkin conducted an unsuccessful operation, because Russia was immediately suspected of sabotage with the rupture of submarine cables.
“The main goal is to check the reaction of NATO countries, as well as analyze the activities of structures of Western states. Naryshkin completely failed this task, and Russia’s ears are sticking out from behind it in terms of information, because the traces of the Russians immediately surfaced,” Kovalenko added.
