US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated this on Tuesday during a joint press conference with the President of Costa Rica in San Jose, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.
"We will not stop foreign aid. We will have foreign aid that makes sense," the US Secretary of State said.
Thus, he explained the decision made a few days ago to suspend international support programs, as well as to curtail the work of the USAID agency.
At the same time, he said, if these are life-saving programs, providing food or medicine or anything that saves lives and is urgent, they will continue to be implemented.
On January 24, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered a “cease fire” on all foreign aid, with the exception of emergency food aid, which could include Gaza and Sudan.
The central office of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) did not open on February 3, and its employees were notified not to come to work. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he was taking over as USAID administrator.
