Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Maloni supported President Sergio Mattarella, who compared modern Russia to Nazi Germany.
This is reported by Reuters, Ukrinform reports.
Last week, Italian President Sergio Mattarella criticized the “wars of aggression” that led to World War II. “That was a project of the Third Reich in Europe. The current Russian aggression against Ukraine has the same nature,” he said.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on Friday called Mattarella's statements "blasphemous fabrications."
In turn, Giorgia Maloney stated that the words of the Russian spokeswoman "insult the entire Italian nation, which the head of state represents."
"I express my full solidarity, as well as the solidarity of the entire government, with President Mattarella, who has always strongly condemned the aggression committed against Ukraine," she added.
The agency notes that Italy is traditionally one of the countries in Europe that has close political and economic ties with Russia, but under Meloni's leadership it has strongly supported Ukraine, including with military assistance.
