German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed his belief that talk about sending peacekeepers to Ukraine is inappropriate.
In his opinion, this would mean that Europe assumes that it will not return some of the territories occupied by the trenches. He stated this in an interview with the German publication RND.
“I believe that such discussions are inappropriate and premature. After all, it is assumed that Ukraine will not get part of its territory back from Russia. I am saying very seriously that nothing should be decided through the heads of Ukrainians. First, we need an end to the conflict and real negotiations, not a dictated peace. Only then will we be able to see what future security guarantees for Ukraine might look like,” Scholz said.
The Chancellor expressed confidence that Ukraine in any case “will have an army that it will not be able to maintain solely through its own financial resources,” and therefore will need the help of international partners.
Peacekeepers in Ukraine – what is known
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that French President Emmanuel Macron's idea of deploying European peacekeepers in Ukraine as a deterrent against Russian aggression is taking shape, but it will not be the only guarantee of security. He noted that this issue was raised by French President Emmanuel Macron and US President Donald Trump.
